Event Cancellation Insurance
An event cancellation insurance policy helps protect your special day – and the planning days leading up to it. Coverage can be purchased up to 15 days before the event date.
Markel’s Special Event Cancellation Insurance pays for your non-reimbursable expenses and non-refundable deposits if you are forced to cancel or postpone your event due to unforeseen circumstances such as:
-
Extreme weather
-
Accident
-
Illness
-
Military deployment
-
Vendor bankruptcy
Our Special Event Cancellation Insurance also covers you if your event does take place – but you incurred extra cost to make last minute changes. For instance, if you are forced to switch your venue due to a kitchen fire, your event cancellation insurance helps you recover any additional expenses. Or if your photographer loses your digital photography files, event cancellation insurance will reimburse any non-refundable fees paid to the photographer.

What Event Cancellation Insurance Covers
Markel’s Special Event Cancellation Insurance policy, purchased with or without a companion Special Event Liability Insurance policy, can be tailored to meet your specific needs and cover the following:
Full Event Cancellation/Postponement
If you face a necessary cancellation or postponement of your event due to a covered reason, Markel’s Special Event Cancellation/Postponement Insurance policy will provide reimbursement for all deposits forfeited and other charges paid or contracted to be paid by the insured or the honoree for transport, catering services, property and equipment rentals, hall and location rentals, accommodations (including travel arrangements and accommodations for a honeymoon, if applicable), special attire, special jewelry, flowers, event photographs and event videos, and entertainment expenses, because of a necessary cancellation or postponement of the event, including a cancellation or postponement resulting from withdrawal of leave.
Loss of Deposits
This event cancellation insurance coverage protects you from losing the deposit money you have put down for your venue, transportation, catering services, accommodations (including travel accommodations), special attire, special jewelry, flowers, event photographs or videos, and entertainment expenses, should the individual vendor be a no-show, go out of business prior to your event or not provide the services agreed to under the executed contract.
Event Photographs
If your professional photographer (or videographer) is a no-show, or the film or digital files are lost or damaged before you receive them, you are covered for the amount contracted to be paid to the photographer (or videographer).
Extra Expense
This event cancellation insurance coverage reimburses you for extra expenses that arise in order to avoid the more expensive option of cancelling or postponing your event. An example of this would be having to pay more to hold your reception at a different venue, due to a fire in the original venue’s kitchen.
Special Gifts
This covers the cost to repair or replace lost or damaged gifts resulting during seven days prior to the event and seven days following the event while at the insured or honoree's home, at the event or in transit between these locations. Theft from a locked vehicle is also covered.
Special Attire
Pays the cost of replacing or repairing special attire for loss or damage prior to the event or the cost to rent if repair/replacement is not possible.
Special Jewelry
Provides the replacement or repair costs for special jewelry used specifically for the event that is lost or damaged during the event or in the seven days before the event.
Professional Counseling
If a medical physician recommends professional counseling due to cancellation or postponement of the event, up to one year of counseling will be covered following the date of the event.
